Bajra Upma / Bajra Rava Recipes / Bajra Rava Upma Recipe Guidance

Bajra Rava

This Bajra Upma is a very tasty & healthy breakfast item,

Monsoon is here in the western ghats. Along with it comes the chill. It has been customary to stock up on bajra rava recipes during cooler seasons to cook a few items to give the body a much-needed energy boost. A whole lot of other dishes can be made with millet flours other than plain Rotis. Mixed with the right proportion of some starchy flours like Tapioca or Arrowroot, a gluten-free flour mix can be made for baking cookies and cakes. Steamed millet flour makes delicious Puttu. Cooked millet flours make tasty Idiyappams.

One such item is this Bajra Rava Upma.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Bajra flour
1/2 cup finely chopped shallots/onions
2 to 3 green chilies chopped finely
1’’ piece ginger chopped finely
some curry leaves

Take Bajra atta in a vessel, add 1/2 tsp salt, and sprinkle water little by little till it becomes a crumbly mixture as in Puttu consistency. When you make a ball, it should hold and when you crumble, it should become powder.

In a 2-liter cooker layer as follows:

  1. 2 tblsp water, 2 tsp coconut oil
  2. shallots/onions, chilies,  ginger, curry leaves
  3. Keep a ring in the center.
  4. Keep a plate/shallow vessel with the bajra flour mix on the ring

Close the cooker with the weight on and cook on high for 3 whistles.

Let the pressure settle. Add the flour to the onion and spices, and mix thoroughly. Add tadka of mustard seeds, urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves, and asafoetida in coconut oil.
